Stanwick, Burkhart to Debut Saturday

March 19, 2016
The Machine announced today that 2011 Tewaaraton winner Steele Stanwick and fellow rookie Marshall Burkhart will make their MLL debuts this weekend on Saturday, June 16, against the Long Island Lizards.

In 2011, Virginia attackman Steele Stanwick had a dream season, winning the Tewaaraton Trophy as the national player of the year, and the 2011 National Championship.  This season Stanwick had another highly successful year after being selected #2 overall by the Machine, when he led the country in assists with 51 and was named a Tewaaraton Award Finalist.

Stanwick began playing lacrosse when he was young and hasn’t looked back since.  “I have always loved lacrosse since I first picked up a stick when I was 6 years old,” said Stanwick.  “All of my brothers and sisters played as well so it was an easy choice.”

Sixteen years later Stanwick will take the field alongside the best players in the world and is excited to be involved in the Machine’s inaugural season.  “I’m very proud to be a part of a great team and franchise,” said Stanwick.

In his debut this Saturday, Stanwick will be wearing number 66 and playing at attack for the Machine.

Also making his debut this Saturday is former Johns Hopkins midfielder Marshall Burkhart.  Burkhart, a 6’1” 200 pound defensive midfielder, is coming off of a breakthrough senior season where he served as co-captain and anchored one of the country’s best defenses.

Burkhart’s debut will mark his return to Ohio.  Burkhart played high school lacrosse at Dublin Jerome High School where he won a state championship.  On Saturday, Burkhart will run out onto the field wearing number 28, the same number he wore while a member of the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays.

Stanwick and Burkhart’s addition to the team is only one of several roster moves the Machine has made in preparation for this Saturday’s game.  The team has also traded defenseman Kevin Ridgway to the Charlotte Hounds for a 3rd round pick in next year’s Supplemental Draft and waived midfielder Matt Lalli.
