#Sheentime with Matt McMahon

February 1, 2017
Well it’s that time…#sheentime is back… this week we sat down with our star defender Matt McMahon.

McMahon has been with the Ohio Machine for the past two seasons, being one of the main catalysts to lead the defensive front. During our 2016 Championship run, McMahon was a defensive stalwart, playing in every game. McMahon has been a prominent member of the Ohio Machine ever since he was drafted in the 2015 Collegiate Draft. In 2016, McMahon snagged 18 groundballs and scored his first MLL goal against the Boston Cannons on May 21.

How old were you and why did you start playing lacrosse?

I started playing lacrosse in fourth grade. My older brother was playing in high school at that point and I always tried to emulate him in every way, so if he was playing I had to learn as well.

Where did you attend to college?

I attended the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, McMahon participated in the West Philly Young Quakers (WPYQ), a program through which each Penn player is paired with a student from a local elementary school for lacrosse practice and academic training.

If you could play professional sport what would it be and why?

Golf. You get to play the most beautiful courses in the world and if you’re good you could play professionally for a really long time

Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?

Nothing too peculiar but I stick to my routine pretty strictly. If I forget a step or do something out of order it usually takes me a few minutes to convince myself it’s not the end of the world

What is your favorite thing about lacrosse?

My favorite thing about lacrosse is the creativity. The game seems to be always evolving, whether it’s a new move or a new check you’ve never seen before, something new seems to get created all the time.

How did you choose your jersey number?

Nothing really sentimental about it, just always thought it was a good number

What is your weekday job?

I am an investment banker for a start-up M&A advisory firm. Right now our company consists of 3 people

Who do you most admire and why?

Elon Musk. His dedication and attitude towards technological advancement is so awe-inspiring and he seems to be a pretty genuinely good person. Seeing someone who is already that successful not be satisfied with their accomplishments and constantly striving to achieve more is a reminder that there is no limit to what you can do.

What is a fun fact about you that not many people know about?

After 4 semesters of studying it in college, I can speak very limited conversational Hungarian

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Chicken parmigiana

If you could have dinner with any one person living or dead…who would it be?

Jim Valvano, “Jimmy V”, seems like he would be an incredible person to have dinner with. Hearing about his run to a national championship with NC State would be awesome but also his perspective on life was so profound, I would love the opportunity to gain some insight from hearing about his experiences.

What is one app that you could not live with on your phone?

NHL: Devils

Favorite quote?

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Philly cheese steak with cheese whiz and onions – Favorite Philly Cheesesteak Spot “Jim’s on Southside

Who is the funniest person on the team? Scott Rodgers

Who has the most swagger on the team? Brian Karalunas

Who on the team has the best dance moves?  Tom Schreiber

Who has the best hair on the team? Greg Puskuldjian

Should John Grant bring back John Blonde Jr?  No. Would just be chasing a dream.

What are you most excited for in 2017?

I’m most excited that we are returning a nearly identical roster and staff as we had last year. I think every fan and member of the organization feels like we had a tremendous squad last year and that the season did not finish the way we had all hoped it would. To be able to get another shot with all the same guys is something I am incredibly excited for.

What are your thoughts on playing at the very first Major League Lacrosse facility, Fortress Obetz?

I could not be more grateful to be playing at Fortress Obetz next year. Being a part of professional lacrosse at this point and time, your goal is to grow the sport and the league to the best of your abilities so that one day it can garner the same respect as the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. We all recognize that we have a long way to go but building a lacrosse-specific stadium in Ohio (not a traditional hotbed) means our organization must be making progress towards that goal
