Machine Trades For Inaugural Season Players

March 19, 2016
The Ohio Machine, which begins its inaugural season in Major League Lacrosse in May 2012, announced today its first player moves for the 2012 season through a trade with the Rochester Rattlers.

The Machine acquired The Ohio State University alums Greg Bice, Anthony Kelly and Stefan Schroder, as well as MLL veteran Brett Garber and Rochester’s second round MLL Collegiate Draft pick (15th overall). In return, the Machine traded their first round (1st overall) and 13th round (25th overall) MLL Expansion Draft picks and their second round (10th overall) and third round (18th overall) MLL Collegiate Draft picks to Rochester.

“Greg and Anthony are two veteran all-stars and outstanding players. Brett has proven to be a consistent scorer in Major League Lacrosse and Stefan is one of the up and coming young goalies in the League,” said Head Coach Ted Garber. “With this core group of talented players, we are off to a great start to putting our team together for next season.”

Greg Bice was named the 2011 New Balance Sportsmen of the Year and was named the Rattlers 2011 Defender of the Year after playing in 11 of Rochester’s 12 games. A three-time MLL All-Star, Bice was drafted in 2004 by Philadelphia and played for Los Angeles and Chicago before joining the Rattlers in 2011. Before beginning his professional career, Bice was a two-time All American, three-time First Team All Greater Western Lacrosse League and the 2004 All Greater Western Lacrosse League Player of the Year with the Buckeyes.

Anthony Kelly, a face-off specialist, is a six-year MLL veteran and a three-time MLL All Star who played for Los Angeles and Chicago prior to Rochester.  With Rochester, Kelly played in 11 of the Rattlers 12 games, scoring three goals and one assist.  Kelly is currently fifth all time in the MLL for career faceoff wins (841) and Top 5 all time for faceoff attempts. Prior to the MLL, Kelly played for OSU from 2000 to 2003, starting every game of his college career and becoming the only player in school history to lead the team in ground balls all four years.

Stefan Schroder played his first year in the MLL for Rochester in 2011 after being drafted in the 2011 MLL Supplemental Draft. Schroder played for the Buckeyesfor two years after transferring from Onondaga Community College. Schroder finished the 2007 OSU season ranked in the top 20 nationally for goals against average and save percentage. In 2008, he backstopped the Buckeyes to an upset win over Cornell University in the first round of the NCAA tournament. While with Onondaga, Schroder was two-time All American and was the Defensive MVP in two back-to-back National Championship wins.

Brett Garber joins the Machine after five years in MLL, including tenures with Rochester, Boston, Chesapeake and Chicago. In 2011, Garber recorded five goals and four assists in 10 games. Garber graduated from University of Massachusetts where he was a two time All-New England First Team and ended his college career with 50 goals.

“We’re very pleased that we were able to make this trade with Rochester,” said Machine President and GM John Algie. “These four players will be the nucleus of our team and we look forward to seeing them on the field for our inaugural season.”

The Machine will have more opportunities to acquire players during the MLL Expansion Draft on December 7, the MLL SupplementalDraft on December 14 and the MLL Collegiate Draft on January 13.
