The Ohio Machine announced today the acquisition of University of Maryland midfielder Jake Bernhardt through a trade with the Hamilton Nationals. In return for Bernhardt, the Nationals receive the Machine’s third round pick in the 2015 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. The Nationals drafted Bernhardt in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft as the 12th Overall pick after a standout 2011 season. Bernhardt suffered a preseason injury in 2012 forcing him to redshirt his senior year and to rejoin the Terps for the 2013 season.
“Jake is an exceptional athlete that will bring a tough and dynamic presence to our midfield,” said Machine President and General Manager John Algie. “His work ethic, character and leadership abilities are also first rate and we’re excited to add him to our group of up-and-coming young talent.”
The 2013 Maryland captain Bernhardt finished his college tenure playing in 65 games for the Terps, where he tallied 49 goals and 14 assists for a total of 63 points. As a redshirt senior at Maryland, Bernhardt was fifth on the 2013 team for points (24) and assists (7), as well as set a career high in a season for goals (17), assists and points. Bernhardt, who was part of the 2011 ACC Championship team, was also named captain in 2012 and won the 2010 William College Award as the team’s best overall midfielder. He closed out his time at Maryland with 18 multi-point games and 13 multi-goals games.
The Machine begins a two-game road trip against the Rochester Rattlers on Sunday, June 2, at 5 p.m. in Rochester. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The Machine will then take on the Charlotte Hounds in Charlotte on Saturday, June 8, before heading back home to Columbus on Saturday, June 15, to take on the Rattlers during “Ohio Lacrosse Night.” Click here to purchase tickets today.
