Machine Lose After Last-Minute Lizards Comeback

March 19, 2016

The Ohio Machine played the New York Lizards in its final season game and lost 14-11 after a Lizards comeback within the final minutes of the last quarter.

New York’s Steve Mock opened up the quarter with the first shot of the game for an early 1-0 Lizards lead. Steele Stanwick answered shortly after to tie the game 1-1. The Machine tried to drive to the Lizards’ cage but lost its opportunities in turnovers that kept New York’s momentum moving.

Steve Mock took advantage of the turnovers to score his second of the night and give the Lizards the lead again. Dominique Alexander rushed down the field after a save from Scott Rodgers to score his first goal of the season and tie the game back up, 2-2. Kiel Matisz put one more up on the board with minutes remaining in the first quarter to take the lead 3-2.

The Machine started to break away with the lead in the second quarter after two goals from Jake Bernhardt and Kiel Matisz. New York’s Steve Mock pushed through the Machine defense to score a first half hat-trick and shorten the Machine’s lead 5-4.

The Machine offense fought to take back a cushion lead and was soon ahead 7-4 at halftime after goals from Joe Cummings and Logan Schuss.

The Lizards offense bolted out of halftime and tied the game early in the third quarter scoring three quick goals. Eric O’Brien cut the tie game short and responded with a goal to give the Machine back the lead 8-7. New York’s offense kept pushing to tie the game 8-8 with five minutes to play in the quarter.

With five seconds left in the third quarter, Chazz Woodson flew from behind the net to score for the Fireball Whisky Shot of the Game and gave the Machine back its lead to go into the final quarter ahead 9-8.

Both teams tried to break away with the lead in the final quarter but were caught in a tie game for the majority of the quarter. Within the final minutes of the game, New York’s offense stepped up to score three goals within three minutes to gain a three-point, 13-10 lead.

New York’s defense held tough and only allowed one more Machine shot from Steele Stanwick. JoJo Marasco added a final goal for the Lizards for a 14-11 New York victory in the last game of the season.
