Machine Defeated by 1st Place Bayhawks

Ohio Machine (2-9) goalie Brian Phipps made 17 saves but the Machine fell to the first place Chesapeake Bayhawks (9-2) 11-7. 

Chesapeake attackman Drew Westervelt scored the first goal of the game but Machine attackmen Jim Connolly and Joe Cummings scored back-to-back goals to give the Machine the 2-1 lead. Steven Brooks scored 57 seconds into the second quarter to tie the game up at two. 

Both teams were held scoreless for nine minutes and during that span Chesapeake committed two penalties and Ohio committed three including an Illegal Crosse Personal Foul by defenseman Max Schmidt.   

The Bayhawks took the lead on a powerplay goal from Ben Hunt late in the second quarter, but Machine rookie attackman Steele Stanwick found Cummings for his second career MLL goal. 

Midfielder Matt Abbot scored with 20 seconds left in the first half to give the Bayhawks the lead but defenseman Greg Bice scored his first goal of the season 10 seconds later. 

Chesapeake scored a two-pointer to increase their lead to 6-4 to start the third quarter.  Goals from attackman Drew Westervelt and Michael Kimmel gave the Bayhawks a four goal lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

For the fourth straight quarter the Bayhawks scored the first goal of the period when attackman Ben Rubeor scored.

Machine attackman Joe Cummings netted his first career hat-trick and ended the Bayhawks run.  Cumming’s goal cut Chesapeake’s lead to four.

The MLL’s all-time leader in in two-point goals, Kyle Dixon, scored his MLL record 12th two-point goal to take back the Bayhawks’ six goal lead. 

Midfielder Connor Martin scored a two-point goal with less than two-minutes left to make it 11-7 but the Machine could not convert in the final minute and fell to 2-9 on the year.
