Ohio Machine (1-3) midfielder Connor Martin’s four goals, including his second hat trick of the season, was not enough to overcome the Long Island Lizards’ (2-2) 13 second half goals and Ohio fell to Long Island 20-10.
Lizards’ midfielder Brian Langtry led the team with five goals, and opened the game with back to back scores to give the Lizards an early 2-0 lead. The Machine tied the game on goals from midfielders Brett Garber and Connor Martin.
The two teams traded goals until the Machine took its first lead of the game on Chazz Woodson’s tenth goal of the year. The Lizards answered with three straight goals to close out the half.
Lizards’ midfielder Stephen Peyser scored the first goal of the second half and his first goal of the season. Machine attackman Connor Martin answered Peyser’s goal but the Lizards scored four straight goals to extend their lead to seven.
Martin scored back to back goals and Woodson flew through the air for a goal to cut into the Lizards’ lead. The Machine carried its momentum in the fourth quarter when rookie midfielder Rob Rotanz scored the first goal of his MLL career.
"To score my first goal in the first game is obviously pretty cool but I would have liked to come out with the win," said Rotanz.
Peyser ended the Machine’s run and the Lizards scored the next six goals to give Long Island their second win of the season.
Machine goalie and MLL Defensive Player of the Week Stefan Schroder followed up his award winning performance with 15 saves. Woodson scored two goals and one assist to lead the team with three points. Connolly was second on the team with two points (1G 1A).
For the Lizards, Langtry had five goals and MLL Rookie of the Week and attackman Matt Gibson had a goal and four assists. Midfielder Max Seibald, midfielder Grant Catalino and attackman Stephen Peyser each had hat tricks.
Lizards’ 2011 MLL All Star goalie Drew Adams only allowed ten goals and made eight saves and midfielder Greg Gurenlian led the Lizards with 22 face-off wins.
The Machine will return to Selby Stadium for a three game home-stand beginning with a game against the Denver Outlaws next week at 7 p.m.
Head Coach Ted Garber knows the team will have to be more efficient on offense in order to hand the Outlaws their second loss of the season.
"We have to try and score more goals that the other team by having the ball for more and more possessions over the course of 60 minutes," said Garber.
