Coach's Corner with Coach Garber

April 16, 2013

How do you think training camp went this weekend?

“So far it’s been great. Everything’s been running smoothly, we got everybody here that could get here this weekend. The guys have played well in all the drills and in our scrimmage situations they got better every session, so that’s a positive sign.“

How did training camp this year differ from last year’s camp?

“Last year we were just trying to figure out who we had, it was just like running an open tryout basically as an expansion team. But now we know who we have as our core guys and what they can do and we added some new players from the draft so it’s a lot different. It’s a whole different team dynamic we have going on.”

What is the team chemistry like on the field?

“These guys love playing together and everyone throws around the word “team chemistry” and I tell them think of us. Be unselfish and make shared sacrifices and if you do that, the chemistry will take care of itself. And if not, we’ll work on biology.”

What are you trying to focus on here at camp for the season?

“We’re trying to simplify things offensively and defensively so these guys can use their talents within a team concept without having to overthink the game and reinvent the game. I think we got that message across this weekend because as the practices progressed, they all got a lot better.”

What are you looking forward to the most this season?

“Just getting things underway and seeing how everyone comes together in a new season and expanding on the progress and success we had last year. We still have a lot of guys coming in from the college draft, so we’ll see how those guys fit in. I think this team could surprise a lot of people. I don’t think we’ll surprise ourselves because we know what we can do, but I think it’s going to surprise people that are thinking of what the team was like last year.”

What are you hoping for next weekend?

“Hoping we’ll keep getting better. We’ll have some new guys that weren’t here today and get them in the mix and see what they can do and it’s just a matter of getting better every practice. We don’t have to add a lot we just have to keep fine tuning our game play: our offense, our defense. If we do the fundamentals well, then everything will fall into place. I tell them you don’t have to make a great play, you just have to make a smart play and do it together and you’ll probably have success. They were doing it the last 25 minutes of this weekend so it was great to see.”
