As soon as our last game was over against New York in August, our staff started preparing for the 2014 season. We needed to put the Machine in the shop and go to work!
Our first order of business was to secure the 2014 coaching staff. The plan: secure staff and make sure we all know our role in the organization! Leadership starts with us. We need to take ownership first then the players will follow our lead. I thought it was important to evaluate how we were using our paid positions and if there were opportunities to get better in certain areas. With the departure of our equipment manager after two seasons, we discussed the options available with that position. We made the decision to hire Wilmington College Head Coach Dom Marzano.
Coach Marzano, who I’ve known for a few years, will handle film editing and running the box on game day in addition to handling the equipment side of things. This move will be very beneficial to the organization in many ways.
The next step in our plan was player feedback. We wanted to hear from the players on what they thought about the past season and what their thoughts were on the future. After the initially touching base with the players through emails, I made follow up phone calls to each player to have one-on-one time – to really get a good understanding of each guy. By doing this we felt that we could make educated choices on decisions moving forward with this feedback in mind.
Now our focus is on the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft. The key now is to contact college coaches on certain players we have in mind for the future to help us be best prepared for the draft. On top of contacting coaches, we have been going to fall ball games and watching films in preparation for January 10th. There are a lot of talented players that will be coming through in 2014 and we look forward to seeing who we can add to our talented young roster.
