On Saturday October 15, The Ohio State University and Ohio Wesleyan University’s men’s lacrosse teams will face each other as part of the Colleen J. Dobbins Memorial Fall Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of OSU. The Classic will also feature the Canisius College Golden Griffins, who finished fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference last year.
The CJD Memorial Fall Classic is being held in honor of Colleen Dobbins, the daughter of OSU’s Assistant Coach Dave Dobbins and his wife Erin. Colleen, who was five and half months old, passed away unexpectedly last spring at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. A $5 donation will be collected at the entrance for the CJD Memorial Fund to support Nationwide Children’s Hospital who helped make Colleen an organ donor and save the lives of two other children.
The Classic will feature three games starting with a rivalry match featuring OSU and OWU at 1 p.m. This is one of many meetings between the two schools who haven’t met on the field since 1996. OWU holds a 34-14 lead in the all-time series.
OSU is coming into Fall Ball off of an 8-8 season, featuring a win over North Carolina, which was the first win over a Top 3 opponent in program history. During the 2011 season, OSU qualified for the inaugural ECAC tournament and won the unofficial “Big Ten Tournament” with a triple-overtime win over Penn State. OSU finished their season 11th in the NCAA and first in the ECAC in team defense (8.06).
OWU Bishops is the only Division III school playing in the event. OWU finished 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, earning a berth into the Division III playoffs. The Bishops season ended in the first round losing to 16th ranked Denison. Coach Mike Plantholt returns for his second season as the Bishops head coach and helms a team, which held opponents to 6.74 goals per game.
The Golden Griffins will travel from Buffalo, New York to play their only Fall Ball game of the season, who finished last season 3-9.
