2019 Ohio Lacrosse Midseason Check-In

March 28, 2019
As many things in life we all must make adjustments.  And that is what I did to the preseason rankings, made some adjustments. Some of the picks were spot on and of course a couple surprises good and bad.

Who Stayed The Same
Ohio State – Ranked #1 – They are the best team by far in the great state of Ohio and for now making a case for the Nation. No team is hotter than Coach Myers' Buckeyes.

Cleveland State – Ranked #2 – Are they better than Denison? Maybe (and probably) so they make the move to number two. The win against Marquette was impressive. They've won three of the last five with the two losses are to Penn State and UNC in respectable games.

Ohio Wesleyan – Ranked #4 – Well not the start they hoped for, but they have the ability to ramp it up.  They did have wins over Kenyon, John Carrol and Otterbein who were all ranked in our previous poll.

Baldwin Wallace – Ranked #9 – BW had a big win over the Lords of Kenyon but currently suffering a two-game skid with losses to Capital and SUNY Brockport.

Hold The Door...
Kenyon – Went from seven to 10 due to win over OAC foes Capital and Otterbein however big losses to OWU and Baldwin Wallace has knocked them down a bit. They have a shot at a strong finish with Denison and DePauw at home but only time will tell!

ONU – Jumped up from seven to five in the poll.  I think everyone figured they would be better than “just good”.  They have done exactly what people would have guessed.  Issue is that the teams who they have had their seven-game run on are a combined 22-31. Should be interesting as they head into conference play if they can keep the momentum.

Buy Now?
Capital –  Jumped from 12 th to fifth in the poll. The Crusaders have avenged three of their 2018 losses in their seven-game run. The problem is not sure they can get much higher than fifth in our poll so probably should have bought stock when the first poll came out.

Lourds – 14th to 10 th in the poll.  Honestly do not know much about their schedule but they are winning some games!  Also no some of the teams ahead of them may start to cannibalize one and another!

Jury Is Out...
Denison – Ranked #2 – I am keeping them at the top for they are 5-2 winning four of the last five games they have played.  Question is have they beat anyone??  This ranking is not on steady ground by no means, but I need more meat to kick them out of a top spot.

John Carrol and Otterbein have been traditional beast in the OAC and now it looks like they could be watching Capital and Ohio Northern start to pass them by.  However these teams are combined 11-6 with wins over Wooster (both of them). Which in most years would be great but this year Wooster doesn’t look so hot.

Big Second Half…
Oberlin, Wooster, Wittenberg and Lake Erie are a combined 7- 22.  These teams were ranked but MUST have a big second half to their season to bump back into the rankings.

That is the mid-season report. And of course, my semi-educated opinion. No coaches contributed to this poll and this is simple math (or something like that!). Best of luck to all the teams as they all kick off conference play!
