Ohio Machine: By The Numbers

The Machine is getting close to firing on cylinders. How close you ask? Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Six games into the 2014 season the Machine are putting up some impressive numbers as a unit. The Machine ranks first in the league with a shooting percentage at .300, and is tied for second in shots on goals percentage at .615.

Machine attackman Marcus Holman ranks eighth in Major League Lacrosse with 18 points and 12 goals. Steele Stanwick has 13 assists on the season putting him alone in second place in the league.  Fellow attackman Logan Schuss, who has only played in four games this season, has 11 goals so far on the season.

Midfielders Peter Baum and Kyle Harrison are third and fourth respectively in points by a midfielder. Baum leads all midfielders MLL with 14 goals and is boasting and impressive shooting percentage of .341. Tom Schreiber, who has only played in four games after finishing his collegiate career, has 7 goals and 2 assists to round out the unit.

With the NCAA tournament over offenses are starting to come together.

“Clearly there is an influx of college guys once the tournament is over,” according to Machine midfielder Kyle Harrison, “but six games in, everyone is starting to hit their stride offensively.”

Continuing to improve on an already potent attack will be key for the Machine heading into the second half of the season. The Machine have a high energy and fast paced offense according to Coach Bear Davis.

“That’s the way we want to play,” Davis said. “I think it’s fun pushing transition and trying to expose some of those situations, but we still want to calculate risk and not just run down the field. I think the fans like the fast-paced game and that’s the only way the league is going to get better. The fans want to see guys make plays.”

Special teams have also been an important cog for the Machine this season. Of their 16 man advantages this season the Machine have converted on 8 of them putting them atop the league in that category. The penalty kill has also been strong for the Machine. The team has seen 18 one man disadvantages with the defense killing 14 of them for a penalty kill percentage of .777. Helping the penalty kill has been goaltender Brian Phipps, whose goals against average places him third in the league at 9.93.

Looking at the season so far it is clear to see that the Machine is finding their identity as a team.  The key is firmly in the ignition, all they have to do is make one or two turns and fire up the Machine.
