NCAA Lacrosse Weekend Update - Week 7

The seventh full week of NCAA lacrosse has come to pass. Several of the top teams were in action, including many of the Machine’s 2014 collegiate draftees.

Mark Glicini scored the game-winning goal with 38 seconds left on the clock gave Yale a 16-15 win over Princeton on Saturday. The Tigers’ Jake Frocarro had an outstanding game, tying a 63-year-old record with 10 goals. The back-and-forth game featured three lead changes and six ties, including a 15-15 tie late in the fourth quarter when Ryan Ambler scored on a feed from Tom Schreiber with 1:52 to go. Yale won the next face-off, retained possession and Glicini score the winning goal. Schreiber, who finished the game with a goal and three assists, was a Tewaaraton Award finalist last season and was drafted by the Machine with the first overall pick in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft.

The Virginia Cavaliers earned a hard-fought 11-10 overtime win over Johns Hopkins on Saturday. The win over Hopkins marked the 600th victory in program history and secured possession of the Doyle Smith Cup, the award given to the winner of the regular season matchup between the two schools. Machine draftee Rob Guida had four assists for John’s Hopkins in the close game, while fellow Machine draftee Joseph Lisicky collected two groundballs and caused a turnover for the Cavaliers. Lisicky continued his strong defensive play on Monday as he caused two turnovers in Virginia’s 21-3 win over VMI.

North Carolina beat a #1-ranked team for the third year in a row with an 11-8 victory over Maryland on Sunday. Balanced offensive attacks helped both teams, with scoring spread across six players for Maryland and eight players for North Carolina. The Tar Heels held a one goal lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, North Carolina outscored Maryland 3-1 en route to a win. Machine draftee and Tar Heels’ midfielder R.G. Keenan took four face-offs in the game.

Matt Kavanagh tied a school record with seven goals and helped pushed Notre Dame to a 13-7 win over Ohio State on Tuesday. The Buckeyes scored the only goal of the opening quarter, marking the first time all season the Fighting Irish was held scoreless for an entire quarter. Notre Dame struck back in the second quarter with five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. The Fighting Irish held a 5-3 halftime lead and would outscore Ohio State 8-4 in the second half. Ohio Machine draftee Stephen O’Hara started the game for Notre Dame and grabbed a ground ball in the win.

Deemer Class scored six goals and added four assists to lead Duke past Syracuse 21-7 on Sunday. The Orange scored the first two goals of the game, but a 10-goal Duke run gave the Blue Devils a lead they would not relinquish. Syracuse’s Derek Maltz and Scott Loy scored a goal and had an assist respectively. The Machine drafted both Maltz and Loy in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft.

John Umbach scored to break an early 1-1 tie and Ohio Wesleyan went on to a 9-5 victory over Oberlin on Saturday. Umbach and Brendan Bouchard each scored two goals while Casey Helms scored a team high three goals in the win. The Bishops never trailed as they cruised to victory.  Ohio Wesleyan midfielder and Machine draftee Spencer Schnell did not play in the game.
