NCAA Lacrosse Weekend Update - Week 5

The fifth full week of NCAA lacrosse has come to pass. Several of the top programs were in action, including many of the Machine’s 2014 collegiate draftees.

A fourth quarter goal by Machine Draftee Rob Guida started a six-goal run for John’s Hopkins that led the team to a 15-8 win over UMBC on Saturday. Hopkins opened an early lead on UMBC, but the Retrievers cut the deficit to a single goal in the second quarter. The Blue Jays would outscore the Retrievers 8-2 in the second half to pull away with the win. Hopkins was led by Guida who scored two goals, Brandon Benn who netted five goals and Ryan Brown and Wells Stanwick who both scored hat tricks.

Orange attackmen Derek Maltz and Kevin Rice scored four goals each to lead Syracuse to a 14-8 victory over St. John’s on Saturday. A first quarter goal by Maltz started an 8-0 streak for the team that secured a 12-3 lead early in the third quarter. Orange goalie Dominic Lamolinar made 12 saves in 45 minutes of play to push back the St. John’s offense. Syracuse midfielder Scott Loy had 1 assist to the game. Maltz, who finished the game with five points, and Loy were drafted by the Machine in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft.

North Carolina midfielder Chad Tutton’s third goal of the game proved to be the game-winner as the Tar Heels downed the Princeton Tigers 13-11 on Friday. Tutton’s tally with just under four minutes left to play in the fourth quarter broke an 11-11 tie. Princeton’s Tom Schreiber had a six-point game on three goals and three assists. Schreiber’s third gave the Tigers a one goal lead a minute into the fourth quarter but the Tar Heels scored the final three goals of the game. Schreiber, a Tewaaraton Award finalist last season, was drafted by the Machine with the first overall pick in the 2014 MLL Collegiate Draft. UNC midfielder and Machine draftee R.G. Keenan missed the game with an injury.

Salisbury proved to be too much for Ohio Wesleyan to handle as the Seagulls earned a 13-7 victory on Sunday. An early four-goal run in the first quarter gave Salisbury a 4-1 lead. Ohio Wesleyan midfielder and Ohio Machine draftee Spencer Schnell scored a hat trick, but it wasn’t enough to push back against Salisbury.

A five-goal third quarter led Lehigh to a 9-3 win against Bucknell on Saturday. Thomas Flibotte gave Bucknell a 1-0 lead after the first quarter, but nine straight goals from Lehigh over the final three quarter propelled the Mountain Hawks to a victory. Bucknell scored the game’s final two goals but it wasn’t enough to make up the deficit. Ohio Machine draftee and Bucknell defenseman Jackson Place grabbed 5 groundballs in the loss.

Cornell used a 9-0 run to down Virginia in a 12-9 win on Saturday. James Pannell’s back-to-back goals started the game 2-0 for the Cavaliers. Down by two late in the second quarter, nine straight goals from the Big Red all but ended the contest. Cavaliers’ defenseman, and Machine draftee, Joseph Lisicky grabbed 4 groundballs against Cornell.

A career-high six goals from Erik Adamson led Denver to a 10-7 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday. Adamson scored the opening and closing goals of the game.  Notre Dame led in 46-29 in shots, but it wasn’t enough to push back against a Denver offense. Machine draftee Stephen O’Hara started the game for Notre Dame and collected a groundball in the effort.
