Get to Know the Machine: Jake Bernhardt


The Ohio Machine added fresh faces to its talented roster this season including University of Maryland midfielder Jake Bernhardt who was traded from the Hamilton Nationals in May 2013.

Before attending Maryland, Bernhardt attended Lake Brantley High School in Florida and was ranked the No. 11 freshman midfielder in the nation, the 31st overall recruit by Inside Lacrosse and was the 2008 Central Florida Player of the Year.

At Maryland, Bernhardt was his team’s captain in 2013 and finished his college tenure playing in 65 games for the Terps, tallying 49 goals and 14 assists for 63 total points. Bernhardt was fifth on the 2013 team for points (24) and assists (7), as well as set a career high in a season for goals (17), assists and points. Bernhardt, who was part of the 2011 ACC Championship team, was also named captain in 2012 and won the 2010 William College Award as the team’s best overall midfielder. He closed out his time at Maryland with 18 multi-point games and 13 multi-goals games.

Bernhardt was drafted by the Hamilton Nationals in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft as the 12th Overall pick, but returned to Maryland to play his final season in 2013. So far this season for the Machine, Bernhardt has played in three games where he has tallied one assists and picked up three groundballs.

1. What made you choose lacrosse over all the other sports out there?

I wanted to reach the pinnacle of whatever sport I participated in and I felt I had the best opportunity achieving that goal by playing lacrosse.

2. When you were little, did you expect to play at the MLL level?

It had always been a goal of mine but was unsure if I would be given an opportunity coming from a non-hotbed, Florida.

3. What is some advice you would give to those youth players hoping to make it to MLL status one day?

Focus on the little things, don’t overlook the basics.

4. Who has been your favorite person to work with up to this point in your lacrosse career?

My brother Jesse; we have done almost everything possible together to reach the point we are at in our careers.

5. Who is your lacrosse role model?

No one in particular. I like to watch a lot of lacrosse and emulate my game after some of great players in the college/pro level.

6. What is one thing that you try to improve on with your playing style?

Getting used to the professional style of play.

7. What are you looking forward to the most in the 2013 season?

The opportunity to play in the MLL.

8. How do you usually spend your offseason?

I like to work out, go shoot with my brothers Jesse and Jared and spend time with family and friends.

9. Do you have any game day superstitions? If yes, what are they?

I don’t have any.

10. What is your typical pregame meal?

I don’t have a particular meal.

11. How do you prepare for an upcoming match?

Watch a lot of film, work out, go to the field during the week and work on some of the things that I feel will be effective for the next game.

12. How do you categorize a season as successful?

Winning a championship.

13. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Hard work from my Dad. He always says to me if you do the little things and work hard on your own, “it will all come out in the wash.”

14. What are three words that would describe who you are?

Blue-Collar, Dependable and Active
