Game Preview

The Ohio Machine is on the road again this week to face the Charlotte Hounds for the first time in the 2013 season. The Machine lost both games against Charlotte during both teams’ first MLL season and is ready to get its first season win against its fellow expansion team.

Looking Back

Last week, the Machine tallied its fifth loss of the season against the Rochester Rattlers on the road, 9-7. The Machine had all of its 2013 rookies dressed, including Logan Schuss, Marcus Holman, Dominique Alexander, Kevin Mack, Chase Carraro and Jake Bernhardt. Schuss was the game’s leading scorer putting up four goals for the Machine and tallying his first MLL hat trick. Throughout the entirety of the game, the Machine had difficulty finishing its shots and was unable to find a rhythm on offense. Machine goalie Brian Phipps played in his first 2013 season game and had an outstanding performance saving 15 shots.

Player Notes

#10 (FO/M) Eric O’Brien – O’Brien had the best face-off percentage of his MLL career against the Charlotte Hounds last season. O’Brien won 11 of 14 face-offs during the June 23rd game for a face-off percentage of .785.

#12 (D) Ray Megill – Megill who has been a staple of the Machine’s defense has played in 57 MLL games and has collected 113 groundballs, along with 10 goals and three assists for a total of 15 points.

#20 (A) Logan Schuss – Schuss tallied four goals in his second career MLL game against the Rattlers last week and was the game’s leading goal scorer.Schuss is now tied for second with Kiel Matisz for leading Machine goal scorers in the 2013 season.

#30 (G) Brian Phipps – Phipps just passed 200 saves for his MLL career after saving 15 shots last week against Rochester. Phipps now has 211 saves after three seasons in the league.

#81 (D) Kyle Hartzell – Last season, Hartzell scored three two-point goals between the two games against the Charlotte Hounds. In addition to his two-point goals, Hartzell also scored one goal and collected seven groundballs.

Team Notes

Second Half Scoring Opportunities – Last year against Charlotte, the Machine scored the majority of its goals during the second half of the game. During both games, the Machine went on a 4-0 and a 5-0 scoring streak, stopping the Hounds from scoring for more than ten minutes.

Rookies Facing Rookies – The Machine and the Hounds recently added collegiate draft picks to their active rosters. From its 2013 Collegiate Draft, the Machine added Logan Schuss, Dominique Alexander, Kevin Mack, Chase Carraro and Marcus Holman to its roster, while Charlotte added Mason Poli, Matt White, John Haus, Mike Sawyer and Michael McCormack. Many of these rookies played against each other in college and now have the opportunity to face each other professionally for the first time.

Power-Play Goals – The Machine has scored six goals so far this season off of a power-play. Last season, the Machine was ranked third in the league for goals off of power-play with 18. Charlotte was only able to score 15 times during a power-play last season and has also scored six this season.

Coach’s Thoughts

Improvements Against Rochester –“We did a lot of things in that game that we had discussed that needed to get better during the week. We had some inside shots, but we gave Galloway easy decisions on our goals. Phipps played awesome for us in his first time this year and our defense was able to shut the Rattlers out many times.”

Goalie Competition – “We’re going to bring Phipps back this week. All of the guys have an inner-competition with each other, which is great because they’re all good friends. They all want to win and are great leaders – they’ll do whatever it takes to get us a win. They are all here for the right reason, so we’ll try to find the hot goalie and ride with him for a while.”

Schuss Adaptability – “Logan Schuss is a tough shooter, a hard guy to cover and had a breakout game last week. He scored all of his goals on the midfield after adjusting from playing attack at OSU. I was concerned at first with how much defensive midfield he could play, but he held his own.”

Scouting Charlotte

Charlotte played the New York Lizards this past week and won 14-12 after coming back from behind for the majority of the game. The Hounds kept it close in the first quarter, only trailing by one point. The Hounds caught up to New York’s lead with the help of Peet Poillon and Brian Carroll’s goals to tie the game at 7-7. However, the Lizards yet again pulled away with a two-point goal from a power-play and ended up with a 10-7 lead going into halftime. At the end of the third quarter, the Hounds were finding the energy on offense scoring back-to-back goals. The Lizards still lead 12-9 going into the final 15 minutes. The Hounds took this energy from the third quarter and used it to stop the Lizards in their tracks, disabling them from scoring any more goals in the final quarter. After another round of back-to-back goals and one final goal from Matt Danowski, the Hounds led 14-12 with only minutes to play and walked away with the win.
