In addition to being one of the top defensemen in Major League Lacrosse, Machine co-captain Kyle Hartzell spends his summers off the field developing lacrosse talent through his company, Rogue Lacrosse. Rogue Lacrosse is a program that organizes camps, clinics and competitive teams for kids aspiring to become better at the game of lacrosse. Week after week, he is surrounded by hundreds of kids that want to be a successful lacrosse players just like their coach.
“It’s always about giving back. I love to coach the youth and older kids that are in high school aspiring to play in college,” said Rogue Lacrosse Co-Founder Hartzell. “It’s very rewarding when you teach something and see the kids pick up on it and do what you taught them to do.”
One of the most rewarding experiences Hartzell has had while working at Rogue Lacrosse was seeing one of the kids make his varsity team his senior year.
“This kid was cut as a junior last year and his mom reached out to me and asked me to work with him,” said Hartzell. “I met with him weekly and helped to improve his skills. When he tried out his senior year, he made the team. He lost sleep about not making the team leading up to the tryout, and I kept telling him to just go out and play his hardest. He was so excited and just really happy to be a part of the team.”
A strong work ethic is encouraged at Rogue Lacrosse and from Coach Hartzell. Rogue Lacrosse coaches constantly tell their players that without hard work and commitment, they will not get the success they want on and off the field. Hartzell’s advice for kids wanting to be better players is to give time to the sport you love.
“You have to do something to get better every day,” said Hartzell. “I am a big wall ball believer. Kids who are consistent at a young age and work on their stick skills will be better off when they get to high school. When you get older, hit the weight room and work on your speed and agility. Those are key components that will make you excel on the lacrosse field.”
Rogue Lacrosse is currently hosting several camps for boys throughout the summer in Virginia (Grades 4th-9th), South Carolina (Grades 3rd-12th), New York (Grades 3rd-12th) and Maryland (Grades 3rd-12th).
