Player Notes

#11 (M) Jeff Ledwick: Ledwick, the Machine’s first round Supplemental Draft pick, will be playing in his first ever MLL game. He finished his senior season at Colgate third on the team with 47 points from 32 goals and 15 assists.

#21 (A) Jim Connolly: In the 2012 season, Connolly scored a total of six goals against Denver during the June 9 and July 4 games. Connolly was the highest-scoring Machine player against the Outlaws in 2012.

#44 (D) Greg Bice: Bice is entering his tenth MLL season after playing for Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago, Rochester and Ohio. He was one of the first players to join the Machine during its inaugural year and is one of the few nine-year veterans in MLL. Bice has played in 82 MLL games and has collected 205 career groundballs.

#81 (D) Kyle Hartzell: Hartzell ended the 2012 season by setting the MLL record for most points by a defenseman in a season. Hartzell was also first for defensemen in the league for points with 21 and two-point goals with nine. He was also tied for first for defensemen in the league for goals with 11 and was named to the 2012 All-MLL Team.

Team Notes

New and Old Faces: The Machine has 19 players from the 2012 roster returning for the Machine’s second season, including Jim Connolly, Ray Megill and Max Schmidt, and 18 new players have joined the ranks for the Machine’s 2013 season, including MLL veterans Diogo Godoi and Scott Rodgers.

All-Star Team: 2012 All-Stars Jim Connolly, Chazz Woodson, Kyle Hartzell and Greg Bice are all back for the Machine’s second season and will be playing in the 2013 Home Opener.

Face-Offs: Against Denver last season, the Machine won a combined 37-59 face-offs from the June 9 and July 4 games. Eric O’Brien led the team with 16-26 face-offs won against Denver.

Coaches Thoughts

On the 2013 season: “My outlook going in is that we’re always going to do really well. It’s a tough league to compete in and it gets tougher every year. The challenges of winning have gotten tougher because of all the great players and teams. Our expectation is that we’re going to do really well as a group and hope that we’ll win every game.”

Improvements from last season: “I think last year’s team had a whole different team dynamic as an expansion team. Everyone is familiar with one another now and we have a core group this year. The guys know that they can face the challenges week to week and know what it takes to win. Our improvements will be familiarity and being a step ahead of where we were last year with the team and be more consistent.”

Kyle Hartzell: “Kyle’s an All-Star MLL player and has such a love and passion for the game. I think he will be right where he was last year, and hopefully we don’t have to depend on him as much because we have other core players. He’s an asset to the team, but he’s only human – he can’t carry the weight of the entire team. He is a really good player, puts the team first in front of everything and gives 100 percent.”

Jeff Ledwick’s first MLL season: “He’s a good athlete and a smart player. I can tell he has poise and confidence and is willing to listen to the coaches’ and players’ advice and adapt his playing. He’s going to have the first game jitters like anyone has, but he knows the game and has the confidence to do well.”

Scouting Denver

Denver won their first game of the season with a 21-16 win against Charlotte. Denver attackmen Chris Bocklet and Matt Danowski each scored five goals. With the help of goalie Jesse Schwartzman’ 10 saves from 25 shots on goal, the Outlaws kept their lead. The team as a whole also collected 34 groundballs and won 24 of 39 face-offs. The 2012 MLL MVP Brendan Mundorf is returning to the lineup this week for Denver after finishing his NLL season. Last year Mundorf led the Outlaws with 32 goals, 27 assists and 59 total points. He also finished second in the MLL in goals and was fourth in the MLL in assists. Mundorf is the all-time leading scorer in Denver Outlaws history with 206 career goals with 100 assists in 79 career games.
