Career Day for Machine Player Greg Bice

Ohio Machine defender Greg Bice visited Wilson Hill Elementary School in Worthington, Ohio to talk to students about his profession as a Major League Lacrosse player for the school’s first Career Day.

Bice spoke to three classrooms, which included a brief introduction of himself and information about the Machine and the sport of lacrosse. With all the attention settled on him, Bice began to show the students how he and fellow Machine teammates get pumped up for practices and games from clapping to high fives.

For many of the students who weren’t able to make it out for an Ohio Machine game, Bice showed the students highlights of the Machine’s 2012 inaugural season and passed around his stick, helmet and gloves for them to play with and understand lacrosse a little more.

In addition to talking about being part of the Ohio Machine and what he does on defense as an individual, Bice couldn’t stress enough the importance of teamwork and its relevance to a lacrosse team, as well as in school.

Bice created a teamwork activity for each of his classes to try, which was a game similar to pin-the-tail on the donkey. One student was blindfolded and had to walk around the classroom to find Bice and place a lacrosse ball in his stick with the help of their classmates’ directions.

The students soon realized that when they all tried to give directions to their blindfolded classmate, they could not successfully bring their classmate to find Bice’s lacrosse stick. The classes then decided to either take turns directing or have one classmate direct the blindfolded student, which worked every time. Bice concluded the activity by asking the classes what they thought teamwork meant and how teamwork was present in the activity and their lives.

Bice reminded the students that one of the main reasons he became a professional was because he practiced lacrosse every day. He also told them that practicing math, writing and reading in school will not only help them in class today but also when they become older.

Bice’s interactive presentation had the students practically jumping out of their seats to ask him questions about his job and the Machine and they were begging to continue playing the blindfold game. Every student from each class participated in Bice’s discussions and were more than excited to join in on the breakdown at the end of his presentation.

After the end of all the presentations during Career Day, all of the students said that learning from a professional lacrosse player was their favorite of the morning and were excited about hopefully going to a Machine game this summer.
