Top 10 Machine Moments of 2012

On August 11, 2012, the Ohio Machine faced the Boston Cannons in the team’s last game of its inaugural season.  Despite the pouring rain over 5,000 fans packed into Selby Stadium on “Fan Appreciation Night” to watch the Machine try to upset Cannons, the defending Major League Lacrosse Champions.

The Machine showed right away that they were not going to end its season without a fight.  One minute into the game defenseman Kyle Hartzell scored his ninth two-point goal of the season to give Ohio the early lead.

Boston answered right away, but the Machine entered the second quarter tied with the Cannons.  With less than five minutes to go in the first half the Machine were down 9-6 when the team embarked on a 5-0 scoring run to take an 11-9 lead into the locker room.

Ohio maintained its two-goal lead after the third quarter, but lost the lead when Cannons attackman Kevin Buchanan scored back-to-back goals.  The Machine tied the game back up but ended up losing to the Cannons 18-16.

The loss ended the Machine’s season at 2-12, but the fans were still there in the pouring rain at the end of the game to congratulate the players on an outstanding inaugural season.  For Hartzell, the passion and dedication from the fans was what stood out to him the most from that game.

“We have very good fans in Ohio,” said Hartzell.  “Despite our record fans kept coming out and the last game was awesome.  In some stadiums fans will leave if it is pouring rain, but not our fans, they stayed the entire time.”

Veteran attackman Chazz Woodson was also struck by the Machine’s amazing fan base.  “We were a new team in an emerging lacrosse city, but every game they came out,” said Woodson. “They could have said no we are done with this, but they were always out there. They were even more into the game during our last game even in the rain and that made it one of the best experiences in my career.”

The team’s dedicated fans were rewarded with fireworks and were also able to watch the team’s end of the year award ceremony.

Fans in attendance also got to watch defenseman and local Columbus native Brett Hughes play in his final MLL game of his career. Hughes returned to the MLL this year after a two-year absence from the game and ended his incredible MLL tenure in his home state and in front of family and friends.  Hughes started in 12 games for Ohio and recorded 10 groundballs.

Even though the team will enter the 2013 season without Hughes, the players are looking forward to the team’s sophomore campaign.  “We have a strong foundation to build on,” said Hartzell.  “Having another competitive training camp will help us achieve success and grow as a team.”

The Machine will take its next step toward the 2013 season when it takes part in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft on Friday, January 11th, where the Machine will add to its already youthful and talented foundation with fresh new faces straight out of college. The Machine currently has the number one overall pick of the draft, as well as several picks in the second round.
