Top 10 Machine Moments of 2012

On August 16, 2011, the Ohio Machine took its first steps towards bringing professional lacrosse to Ohio when it announced its head coach, Ted Garber, and its new home for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Selby Stadium.  These announcements helped lay the foundation for the team’s successful inaugural season.

When conducting the team’s inaugural coaching search Machine President and General Manager John Algie was looking for a coach with previous Major League Lacrosse experience.  “With a brand new team we wanted someone with the kind of experience that could minimize the growing pains and someone that already knew what it was like to be successful,” said Algie.

Head Coach Garber proved to be exactly the type of coach Algie and the Machine were looking for.  In 2000, Garber served as a head coach during the 2000 MLL Summer Showcase Tour and was also the head coach for the Bridgeport Barrage during the league’s inaugural season in 2001.  Throughout his career, Garber also spent time as an MLL assistant coach in Boston, Chicago and Rochester.

The Machine’s hiring of Garber not only marked the addition of a skilled coach but also the addition of a skilled evaluator.  “Coach Garber has a very active role with the personnel,” said Algie.  “One of the reasons we were so eager to bring him in is because we share the same mindset philosophically.”

Head Coach Garber’s combination of experience and personality helped lead the Machine to a successful inaugural season on and off the field, as well as will help the team build for the future.  “One of the things that I really respect about coach is that he has a very positive outlook and keeps things in perspective,” said Algie.  “He’s able to focus on the present while still building towards the future.”

Besides hiring an experienced coach, another building block towards a successful inaugural season was the acquisition of a home stadium, which Algie researched for months before deciding.  Announcing Selby Stadium as the team’s home for the 2012 and 2013 season gave the team a newly renovated home field right in the middle of a passionate lacrosse community in Delaware, Ohio.

The initial idea for the team to play on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University came from OWU Athletic Director Roger Ingles.  “We received information about the Machine coming to the Columbus area,” said Ingles.  “I then reached out to John Algie to arrangea meeting to discuss a possible partnership and to tour Selby Stadium.  John was immediately impressed with the facility and the opportunity.  Our location, proud lacrosse history and outstanding facilities made this a perfect match.”

Using Selby as the Machine’s home also made an impact on the local Delaware community.  “The Delaware community as a whole was very proud of hosting theMachine,” said Ingles. “The downtown businesses saw a growth in business on game days. Anytime you can bring in 25,000 plus to your community over the course of four months is going to have a positive economic impact.”

The addition of head coach Ted Garber and the procurement of Selby Stadium was not just an important moment for the team’s inaugural season but also an important moment for the team’s future.  “The excitement a professional team brings to a community issignificant and this attachment between the community and the Machine will only continue to grow,” said Ingles.
