Machine Fight Hard but Lose to Cannons 18-16.

The Ohio Machine (2-12) put up 16 points against the defending MLL Champion Boston Cannons (9-5) but lost to the Cannons 18-16.

Ohio scored the first points of the game when Machine defenseman Kyle Hartzell scored his ninth two-point goal of the season to give the Machine the early 2-0 lead.  That goal gave Hartzell 21 points on the year which set an MLL record for most points in a season by a defenseman.  Cannons midfielder Mike Stone scored two minutes later but Machine midfielder Dan Groot answered to make it 3-1 Ohio.

The Cannons Matt Poskay and Machine midfielder Jeff Colburn traded goals but the Cannons scored two straight goals to end the quarter with the score tied at four.

Both teams scored to open the second quarter but the Cannons went on a three goal run with goals from midfielder Pat Heim, attackman  Ari Sussman, and attackman Ryan Boyle.  Groot broke the Boston run with his second goal of the game but Heim answered with his second.

Machine midfielder Eric O’Brien scored right off of the face-off to begin a seven goal run by Ohio.  Joe Cummings scored two straight powerplay goals and Steele Stanwick scored two after that to give the Machine an 11-9 lead heading into the locker room.

The Machine increased its lead to four in the third quarter on a powerplay goal from Jim Connolly and an unassisted goal from Connor Martin.  Goals from the Cannons' Stone and Boyle cut the Machine’s lead down to two at the end of the third quarter.

Boston’s PT Ricci scored 22 seconds into the final quarter but Connolly scored his second goal of the game to make it 14-12.  The Cannons’ Paul Rabil scored a two-point goal to tie the game up at 14.  That goal gave Rabil 71 points on the season, tying him with John Grant Jr. for the single season record.

The Cannon’s seized a two goal lead on back-to-back goals from Cannon’s attackman Kevin Buchanan.  The Machine responded with two goals from Martin and Connolly.

With the game tied at 16, Cannon’s attackman Ryan Boyle found Buchanan and Poskay to give the Cannons the 18-16 victory and earn a spot in the playoffs.
