Machine Earn 2nd Win of the Season

The Ohio Machine (2-7) held the Hamilton Nationals (2-7) to one goal in the fourth quarter to defeat them 13-12 and earn the team's second win of the season.

The Machine opened the game with a quick goal from midfielder Matt Messina to take the early lead over Hamilton.  The Nationals quickly answered with goals from midfielder David Earl and attackman Joe Resiterits.

Machine midfielder Dan Groot tied the game up at two and then Machine attackman Jim Connolly followed with his 19th goal of the year.  Midfielder Matt Witko extended the Machine’s lead to two with a goal of his own at the end of the first quarter.

Hamilton opened up the second quarter with back to back goals from attackman Cody Jamieson.  Machine defenseman Kyle Hartzell broke up the tie with his seventh two-point goal of the season. Rookie attackman Steele Stanwick and midfielder Matt Casey also added tallies of their own to give Ohio a four goal lead.

The Nationals quickly cut the lead back down to one on a goal from Joe Walters and back to back goals from attackman Stephen Keogh.

O’Brien stopped the run with a quick goal but Nationals' attackman Kevin Crowley scored a powerplay goal to make it 9-8 at the break.

The Nationals took control early in the second half with two straight goals from Garret Billings.  The run was ended when an errant pass by Hamilton ended up in the back of their net for a Machine goal.  Crowley added another one for the Nationals, to give them an 11-10 lead but Machine rookie midfielder Kiel Matisz scored on the power play to tie it up. Connolly gave the Machine the lead at the end of the third quarter with his 20th on the season.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter until Stanwick scored his second goal of the game.  The Machine held onto its two goal lead until Billings completed his hat-trick.

The Machine clamped down after Billings scored and held on to its one point lead to give the team its second win of the season.

Machine goalie Brian Phipps was dominant in goal for Ohio, only allowing 12 goals and finishing one shy of his career high for saves in a game with 17.

Woodson led the Machine with four assists and rookie Steele Stanwick was held without an assist for the first time in his MLL career but still scored two goals.

Face-off specialist Matt Dolente helped keep the Nationals in the game, securing 19 of the 27 face-offs. Billings led all scorers with three goals while also netting an assist.

National’s goalie Scott Rodgers opened the game in the cage for Hamilton and played the first half, allowing eight goals.  Goalie Brett Queener took over in the second half and held Ohio to four goals.
