Machine Trades Kelly To Denver

The Ohio Machine announced Friday a trade that sends face-off specialist Anthony Kelly to the Denver Outlaws for the remainder of the 2012 season. The Machine also traded its 5th Round Pick in the 2013 Supplemental Draft to Denver in exchange for the Outlaws’ 2nd round pick in the 2013 College Draft and 4th round pick in the 2013 Supplemental Draft.

“With any trade that takes place there is a lot of thought and consideration that goes into it. In the case of Anthony, it was an extremely difficult decision based on what Anthony has done for the Machine organization this season, as well as his overall stature in the league as a premiere face-off specialist and veteran leader amongst his peers,” said Head Coach Ted Garber. “I know that the Denver organization is very excited about being able to have a player with Anthony's experience and face-off savvy on their team as they vie for a playoff position. In exchange, because of Anthony's value, the Machine organization has received key draft picks from Denver which will help the team continue to build into a Championship caliber team moving forward.”

Kelly, who played in seven of the Machine’s eight games this year, has recorded a 77-157 at the face-off and scooped up 23 groundballs. Kelly played four years at The Ohio State University and is the only player in school history to lead the team in ground balls all four years of his collegiate career.  After he graduated in 2006, Kelly played with the MLL franchise L.A Riptide.  As a rookie, Kelly made an immediate impact winning 132 face-offs and scored six goals.  After two more years with the Riptide, Kelly played with Chicago and Rochester before joining the Machine.

“This is the hardest decision we’ve had to make to date because Anthony is so well-respected in the locker room and he’s been the face of lacrosse in Ohio for years,” said General Manager and President John Algie. “What’s best for the organization is not always best for the individual. Fortunately in this case, we get great value in next year’s draft and Anthony finds himself on a team right in the thick of the playoff hunt. It was an excellent opportunity for us and for him. We wish Anthony nothing but the best of luck with his new team and know that Denver is getting a great competitor who will help them at the face-off position immediately.”
