Game Preview

The Ohio Machine welcomes the Charlotte Hounds to Selby Stadium in the second meeting between the league’s expansion teams.  Since the two teams’ last meeting the Hounds are on a league high four-game losing streak.

Last Time Out

The Machine suffered a tough loss to the Long Island Lizards at home.  The two teams were tied entering the second quarter when rookie attackman Steele Stanwick scored his first goal of his MLL career to give the Machine an early lead.  A five-goal run by Long Island looked to give the Lizards a 7-4 lead heading into halftime but Ohio scored four points in 21 seconds to lead 8-7 at the break.  Midway through the third quarter the Machine led 10-8 but the Lizards scored five unanswered goals to take a commanding 14-10 lead. The Machine wasn’t able to answer and ultimately lost 16-12.  Attackmen Stanwick and Jim Connolly led the Machine with two goals and an assist each.  Lizards rookie attackman Tommy Palasek had a career high four goals and was named Bud Light Player of the Game and Cascade Rookie of the Week.

Last Time vs. Charlotte (5/12)

Ohio jumped out to a quick three goal lead in its first meeting with the fellow expansion team but Charlotte quickly tied it up.  A five goal run by the Hounds gave them a 9-7 lead heading into the locker room at the half.  The Machine scored two quick goals to start the third quarter but back to back two-point goals from Charlotte midfielders Josh Amidon and Stephen Berger put the Hounds up 13-9. Ohio rallied with a five-goal run of its own to tie the game up at 14. The Hounds began to pull away in the fourth with three straight power play goals fueled by a non-releasable illegal stick-penalty.  In the Machine’s loss, Chazz Woodson and Connor Martin each recorded a hat-trick. Amidon (3G [1 2pt], 2A) and Berger (2G [1 2pt], 3A) had six points each for the Hounds.

Player Notes

In his first career MLL start, face-off specialist Eric O’Brien had a career high of 16 face-off wins and is now 26-49 on the year.  O’Brien’s face-off percentage of .530 ranks him fifth in the league among players who have more than 20 attempts.

In his 45th career game, defenseman Ray Megill set his career high for goals in a game with two.  Megill now has three goals on the season, which is also a career high.  Megill has also dominated on the defensive end. Megill leads the team in groundballs with 24 and is third in the league among defensemen in groundballs per game with four. Megill currently has 96 groundballs in his career.

In his MLL debut, attackman Steele Stanwick had two goals and one assist. Stanwick’s three points (2G 1A) are the fourth most by an MLL rookie in their debut this season.

Goalie Stefan Schroder has been stellar at home this season recording 26 saves and posting 11.5 goals against average, 6.1 points lower than his average on the road.

Defenseman Kyle Hartzell currently leads the MLL defensemen in points with nine and two-point goals with four.

Team Notes

Career Years- The Machine has had 15 different players score goals for them this season.  Nine of those players have already set career highs in goals. Attackmen Jim Connolly and Connor Martin each have 11 goals, surpassing previous career highs of two and 10, respectively. Defensemen Kyle Hartzell and Ray Megill have also set career highs in goals. Hartzell now has five goals and leads the league among defensemen in two-point goals with four.

Home Is Where The Success Is– The Machine have been a much different team at home than on the road this season.  On the road Ohio has given up 61 goals while only scoring 36 goals. At home the offense has also scored 36 goals but the defense has only allowed 42 goals over the course of three games.

Miniscule Minutes- With only one penalty against the Long Island Lizards, the Machine now have the fewest penalty minutes in the league. Through six games, the Machine has only spent 14 minutes in the penalty box. The Charlotte Hounds are second with 15 and the Chesapeake Bayhawks are last in the league with 39 penalty minutes.

Coach’s Thoughts

Last week’s Game– “We missed some inside shots and hit the post multiple times but we got a lot of good shots. Our offensive guys got into pretty good rhythm and flow with the new guys on the field. We took a bit of different approach on the defensive end and the players got it, playing better than last game.”

Playing Charlotte– “Last time we played Charlotte it was a great game. For where our two teams are right now though, neither has given up on either side. It will be a great game on Saturday night in Ohio. I think either team can win this game but our guys are pumped up and ready to take away a W. We are two different teams from when we first met with all the different personnel changes so it will be a different kind of game this time.

Moving Around Roles– “This past weekend we gave players certain roles with a bit more specifications than before. The guys bought into and played well, especially against such a good team.”

Connor Martin– “Connor Martin has been playing midfield for us all year and has been scoring most of his points there. He is versatile on the field for us and is all about our ‘team first’ outlook.”

Rookies making immediate impact– “These guys can play and win in the MLL. They have played a high level of lacrosse against amazing teams coming from college. I tell them that they don’t have to be the best player on the field; you just have to do what you do best.”

Scouting Charlotte

The Charlotte Hounds are currently on the league’s longest losing streak having lost four in a row.  The Hounds most recent loss came at the hands of the Boston Cannons. The Hounds only trailed by two at half-time but the Cannons scored four goals in the third and seven in the fourth to defeat the Hounds 16-8.   Midfielder Stephen Berger and attackman Matt Danowski each had a two-point goal and an assist.  The Hounds are now 1-6 on the season.  Berger leads the team in goals with 15 and points with 26.  Danowski leads the team in assists with 13 in only six games. In seven games, the team has had six different players take a face-off and recently picked up face-off specialist Dan Cooney from waivers.  Goalie Adam Ghitelman has anchored the net for the Hounds, playing in 269 minutes, saving 78 shots and posting 15.15 goals against average.
