Game Preview

After a bye week the Ohio Machine will travel to Long Island to face the Long Island Lizards.  Both teams are coming off of their first win of the season and are currently tied for fourth place in the standings.

Last Time Out

In front of 6,126 fans the Ohio Machine made its home debut at historic Selby Stadium in Delaware, Ohio against the Rochester Rattlers.  Rochester defenseman Steve DeNapoli scored a 2pt-goal to open up the game but the Machine scored seven straight goals to take a commanding 8-2 lead.  The Rattlers cut the lead down to two early in the third quarter.  Chazz Woodson answered with a goal of his own and the Machine closed out the game on a 7-2 run for its first-ever win, 16-10.

Woodson finished the game with four goals and was named Bud Light Player of the Game.  Machine goalie Stefan Schroder had a career day for the Machine netting a career high 17 saves and only allowing eight goals. Schroder’s effort earned him his first MLL Defensive Player of the Week award of his career.

Player Notes

Attackman Chazz Woodson scored four goals for the third time in his career last Saturday.  Saturday’s game also marked the third time Woodson was named Bud Light Player of the Game.  Woodson was named Bud Light Player of the Game once in 2007 and once in 2008.

With one assist against the Rochester Rattlers, midfielder Connor Martin surpassed his previous season high of three assists.  Martin now has nine points (5G 4A) on the season, four away from his career high of 13.

Attackman Jim Connolly has seven goals on 15 shots.  Connolly’s shooting percentage of .474 is fourth among players with ten or more shots.

The Machine’s game against the Lizards will mark the first time midfielder Matt Messina will play an MLL game in his home state of New York.  Messina grew up in Sayville, NY and was named the team’s Most Valuable player during his senior year in high school with the Sayville Golden Flashes.

Team Notes

Well Oiled Offense- The Machine offense has come alive over the last two games, scoring 31 goals.  The Machine now ranks fourth in the league in goals per game with 12.

Spreading the Wealth– Thirteen different players for the Machine have scored a goal for Ohio.  Nine players have scored more than two goals and attackmen Chazz Woodson and Jim Connolly lead the team with 16 combined goals.

Coach’s Thoughts

Garber on Upcoming Game: “We’re happy to get our win and I bet Long Island is happy to get a win over Charlotte. Coming in to this game the two teams are trying to get this early win, which can get you into a position for a good run in the league.”

Garber on Chazz Woodson: "He stays within the team concept but he has free reign to pick and choose times to make big plays."

Garber on Rookies: “We are going to have Rotanz, Eilers, Biscardi and Eisenreich coming into practice and I’m looking forward to seeing them play with our group. We’ll be making our choice after Thursday night practice to see who is the best fit for the game.”

Garber on Matt Messina: “Matt Messina has been the surprise this season. He flies under the radar and is very unselfish. He is a strong kid who can run fast and is taking advantage of this opportunity and proving himself on the field.”

Garber on Momentum Importance: “We want to keep the momentum going…it’s not mission accomplished yet. But getting the momentum going and staying ahead of the game is what will keep us going.”

Scouting Long Island

The Lizards are 1-2 and coming off of a 9-8 win against the Charlotte Hounds.  The Lizards are led by offseason midfield acquisitions Brian Langtry and Max Seibald.  Langtry leads the team in goals (9) and points (12) and Seibald is second on the team in goals with five.  Rookie attackman Matt Gibson had one goal and four assists in his MLL debut.  Lizards’ 2011 MLL All-Star goalie Drew Adams currently ranks third in saves with 43 and has a 13.00 goals against average.
