In front of 6,126 fans, the Ohio Machine won its inaugural home opener over the Rochester Rattlers 16-10.
Rattlers attackman Steven Boyle opened up the scoring with a long two-pointer but Machine attackmen Jim Connolly, Andrew Combs and Connor Martin scored the next three goals to give the Machine a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Midfielder Matt Casey scored less than a minute into the second quarter to extend the Machine’s lead. The Machine scored the next three goals, including a 2-pt goal from defenseman Kyle Hartzell, to cap off an 8-0 run.
Rochester finally ended the run with Steven Boyle’s second goal of the day. Two late second quarter goals by Rochester F/O specialist Tim Fallon and attackman Ned Crotty cut the Machine’s lead to four heading into halftime.
After halftime, Rochester rookie midfielder Roy Lang and attackman Kevin Leveille scored to bring the Rattlers within two. The Machine was able to bounce back because of attackman Chazz Woodson’s second goal and a shorthanded goal by midfielder Dan Groot.
Rochester defenseman Steve DeNapoli tried to begin a rally with a goal 14 seconds into the last quarter but goals from Connolly and Woodson guaranteed the Machine its first win of the year.
With that win the Machine became the second expansion team in MLL history, since the Denver Outlaws in 2006, to win its inaugural home opener.
In its first win, the Machine were led offensively by Woodson (4G) and Jim Connolly (3G 1A), who combined for eight points.
On defense, Machine goalie Stefan Schroder played 60 minutes and made a career high 17 saves. Midfielder Anthony Kelly also had a productive night. Kelly went 15-27 at face-off and picked up seven groundballs.
The Rattlers were led by Boyle who had a 2-pt goal and an assist. Veteran midfielder Matt Striebel added a 2-pt goal, the eighth of his career.
The Machine will return to action on June 1st when the team travels to Long Island to face the Lizards.
