Last Time Out

The Machine lost its second game of the season last Saturday, falling to fellow expansion team the Charlotte Hounds 18-15.  The Machine tied the game up at 14 early in the fourth quarter but the Hounds closed out the game on a 4-1 run to earn their first win on the season.  Machine attackmen Connor Martin and Chazz Woodson each had a hat-trick in the loss.

Player Notes

After missing last week’s game against the Charlotte Hounds, Machine goalie Johnny Rodriguez rejoins the team.  In week one Rodriguez made his MLL debut against the Chesapeake Bayhawks.  In his debut Rodriguez played in 15 minutes and recorded three saves.

Midfielder Matt Lalli made his Ohio Machine debut last week and scored two goals on two shots.  Lalli returns to the MLL after taking a two-year hiatus from the league.  Lalli last played in 2009, when he was a member of the Boston Cannons.

With 40 seconds left in the third quarter against the Charlotte Hounds, midfielder Matt Messina scored his first MLL goal.  Messina and Machine midfielder Matt Witko have both scored their first career goals this season.

Machine defenseman Brett Hughes returns to his home state of Ohio to play the home opener.  Hughes hasn’t played a lacrosse game in Ohio since 2000 with Upper Arlington High School.  Three other Machine players played for UAHS – Max Schmidt, Brian Yontz and Brady Williams.

Lacrosse the Nations, co-founded by Machine defenseman Brett Hughes, recently founded a domestic program of LTN in Columbus, Ohio, at Weinland Park where Machine players Brett Hughes, Greg Bice, Connor Martin, Chazz Woodson and Matt Cafarelli all coached practices all week long while in town gearing up for the inaugural season home opener.

Team Notes

All-Stars Nominated – Major League Lacrosse announced the nominations for the 2012 MLL All-Star game in Boca Raton, FL.  The game will feature team Young Guns against team Old School.  The Machine has seven players nominated.  Attackmen Jim Connolly and Connor Martin were nominated for the Young Guns teams.  For the Old School team the Machine has five players nominated including, attackman Chazz Woodson, midfielder Jordan Levine, and defensemen Greg Bice, Kyle Hartzell and Ray Megill.

Home Opener Opportunity – The Ohio Machine are looking to become the second expansion team in MLL history to win their inaugural home opener.  The last team to accomplish that feat was the Denver Outlaws in 2006.

Groundball Gurus – The Machine have been outstanding this season at scooping up groundballs. The Machine currently rank first in the league at groundballs per-game at 36.  Defenseman Ray Megill has been a large part of the Machines groundball efforts, leading the team with 11 groundballs.

Shots on Goal Success– The Machine also lead the league in shots on goal per game.  The team has 65 shots on goal out of 84 total shots.

Coach’s Thoughts

Coach Garber on last week’s game –“We learned a lot about ourselves last week at Charlotte.  Our attitude has been great.”

Coach Garber on Connor Martin– “He has the ability to score in bunches and that’s why we drafted him.”

Coach Garber on the Machine’s offense – “You can be a goal-scorer or a shooter.  I think our guys understand what it takes to put the ball in the net.”

Coach Garber on Rochester attackman Ned Crotty– “We have to pay attention to him.  He’s a game changer but we just have to focus on what we do on defense.”

Scouting Rochester

Rochester is coming off their first win of the season, defeating the Chesapeake Bayhawks 12-8.  Rattlers goalie Mike Gabel made a season-high 27 saves and attackman Ned Crotty had a hat-trick in his season debut.  Gabel is first in the league with a 6.40 goals against average in 75 minutes of action.  Gabel leads a strong defense which is fourth in league in points per game, only allowing 10.5 goals per game.  Rochester also boasts strong special teams and is first in the league in penalty killing percentage at 81.82%.
