Upper Arlington High School Hires New Girls’ Lacrosse Coach

Wendy Pinta will return as coach of the Upper Arlington High School girls’ lacrosse team this spring, athletics director Jodi Palmer said.

Pinta, the team’s coach for 16 years until stepping down before the 2008 season, replaces Kim Rocheleau, who resigned July 19 after coaching the program for three years.

“I thought this was a great opportunity,” Pinta said. “I really missed the high school game. This opportunity presented itself and it was perfect timing for me. I’m eager and excited to be back.”

Pinta inherits a program that went 69-15-1 during her absence. Lynda McCandlish, a 2002 UA graduate, guided the Golden Bears to a 20-2 record and the Division I State Championship in 2008. Rochealeau, a former Ohio Wesleyan coach, took over after McCandlish departed and guided the Bears to a 49-13-1 record, two OCC titles and three state runner-up finishes before resigning.

UA finished 16-5 last spring, losing to Medina 14-13 in overtime in the Division I State Final.

During Pinta’s tenure, the Bears went 213-78-12 and captured state titles 2002, 2004 and 2005. UA also was nationally ranked in the top 25 by U.S. Lacrosse Magazine and LaxPower in those years.

In 2009, Pinta was inducted into the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

"We are happy with the addition of Coach Allen and the women's lacrosse program to our athletics department," said Defiance College Athletics Director Jenni Morrison. "Jason has a lot of local ties and we are excited to see where he can take this program."

The DC women's lacrosse program will compete as a club program throughout the 2012-2013 year, before becoming the 22nd NCAA Division III sponsored sport offered at Defiance College for the 2013-2014 campaign.

Five Medina High School Lacrosse Players Officially Inked for College

Five Medina High School senior student-athletes are officially inked and ready to begin their college lacrosse careers at various universities throughout the U.S. James Dahlheimer to the University of Virginia for men’s lacrosse; and Carrie Kubasta and Elli Hudson-Heck to St. Bonaventure, Christina Haston to Notre Dame College and Katie Keefe to Ohio State for women’s lacrosse.

Dahlheimer is headed to Virginia, which just won the Division I National Lacrosse Championship last year.

“It all starts with the head coach at Virginia,” he said. “He’s probably one of the nicest people I know. He’s obviously very good at what he does and I came to like him a lot on my visit.”

Kubasta, Hudson-Heck, Haston and Keefe were part of a lacrosse team at Medina which is looking for third straight state title.

“This group of four young ladies has been part of a very special program and wining back to back state championships,” said Harrison. “These four ladies have kind of been the trend setters and have helped create a program that all of us here at Medina can be proud of.”

Said Kubasta about St. Bonaventure, “I knew I wanted to be able to play at the Division I level and I think St. Bonaventure is a place where I can do that and actually be able to play. It’s relatively close to home and a small school.

“They have had some success, it’s a growing program. They just got a new coach, but it sounds like once we get there it’s only going to get better.”

Hudson-Heck will be joining Kubasta as a Bonnie.

“Me and Carrie have played together since the sixth grade and we both never thought we would end up at the same school. I didn’t even want to go to St. Bonaventure first, I was kind of set on a different school and as soon as I got there I loved it and my mind started changing.”

Keefe is heading to Ohio State to be a Buckeye and looks forward to being part of a unique rivalry with Michigan.

“I love the coaches and the team is a family and obviously the campus is amazing and beautiful,” said Keefe. “Michigan for the first time will have a women’s lacrosse team when I’m a freshman so it’ll be a cool thing.”

Notre Dame College, Haston’s next stop, is moving up to Division II from NAIA.

“Every year we’re just getting better and my coach is bringing in girls from all over the country, there’s a lot of girls from Florida,” said Haston. “We just have a well-rounded team and they’re like family to me. They’re very accepting and welcoming and that’s what I love about it.”
