Get to Know the Machine: Brett Garber

Leading up to the Ohio Machine’s 2012 inaugural season, we will be featuring your Machine players so you can get to know them off the field, as well as on. In this first edition of “Get to Know the Machine,” we feature veteran midfielder Brett Garber.

Growing up with two of the sport’s best coaches in lacrosse and playing lacrosse since he was in elementary school, Brett Garber has always been around the sport. Coming from a family steeped in lacrosse tradition, Brett is not only following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather but also making his own impressions on lacrosse.

Brett joins the Machine after five years in Major League Lacrosse, including tenures with Rochester, Boston, Chesapeake and Chicago. In Chicago, Brett had a breakout year earning career highs in goals (9), assists (4), points (14) and groundballs (8).

In 2011, Brett recorded five goals and four assists in 10 games with the Rattlers. Brett graduated from University of Massachusetts where he was a two time All-New England First Team and ended his college career with 50 goals. During his senior season, Brett was the only player on his team to have a point in each of the team’s 14 games.

Entering his sixth year in MLL, Brett is one of the first five players named to the Ohio Machine inaugural season roster. He is looking forward to taking the next step in his professional career and helping make history with the Machine and its fans.

Q&A with Brett

1. What made you choose lacrosse over all the other sports out there?

Lacrosse is a bunch of different sports bundled into the one and is the fastest game on two feet.

2. When you were little, did you expect to be one of the best players in the world?

Growing up, there was no such thing as MLL, so I always just hoped to be able to play this game for as long as possible and have fun with it.

3. What is some advice you would give to those youth players hoping to make it to MLL status one day?

Work hard, listen to your coaches and play a different sport every season or recreationally!  It’s amazing how much you can adapt aspects from basketball, soccer and many other sports to game of lacrosse.

4. Why do you love lacrosse?

It’s the fastest game on two feet and allows for all different kinds of players to be successful. You don’t have to be the biggest, fastest, or strongest. You can be a great player when you figure out your own game.

5. Who has been your favorite person to work with up to this point in your career? (College or Pro)

I have learned all I know about lacrosse from my father and Coach Canella at UMass.

6. Who is your lacrosse role model?

Growing up, I tried to take aspects from all different types of players and combine them into my own game.

7. What has been your favorite moment in your pro lacrosse career so far?

Being able to work with young players at the team clinics and seeing the enjoyment on their faces. Being able to give back to the game which has given me so much, is a huge thing for me.

8. What is one thing that you try to improve on with your playing style?

In this game, as an offensive player, I am always striving to become a better shooter because the defense and goalies are so good.

9. What are your thoughts on being part of the Ohio Machine inaugural season?

I am very excited and think the Machine have found a great home in Ohio!

10. What are you looking forward to the most this upcoming season?

Playing in Ohio and in front of the large fan base out there!

11. What is one thing you hope to get out of this upcoming season with the Machine?

The 2012 MLL Championship, of course!

12. How do you spend your offseason?

Selling team gear for Atlantic Sportswear and working my tail off in the gym!

13. Do you have any game day superstitions? If yes, what are they (if you care to share)?

I always wear eye black, no matter the conditions outside.

14. What is your typical pregame meal?

Something light, usually fruit or a PB and J.

15. How do you prepare for an upcoming game?

I study the opposing team – I make myself aware of the team’s tendencies offensively and defensively.  I also always make sure I am on point with our own team’s game plan.

16. How do you categorize a season as successful?

Overcoming adversity and/or winning.

17. Do you have any favorite restaurants in Columbus?

I’ve never been and am looking forward to trying many new spots! Any suggestions? (Tweet your suggestions to Brett - @BrettGarber3)

18. Who is your favorite Columbus team, besides the Machine?

I’ve always had an interest to go to a Columbus Crew game, so that would be up there when I come to town.

19. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Always believe in yourself.”

20. What are three words that would describe who you are?

Driven, Relaxed, Personable.
