Come Support One Love Lacrosse Playday

With lacrosse being such a close and loyal community, everyone in the sport is affected when tragedy strikes on of their own. That is the driving force for the Cincinnati Queens, the women’s post-collegiate lacrosse team in Cincinnati/Dayton, to host “One Love Lacrosse Playday” on Sunday, September 25, to benefit The One Love Foundation.  The One Love Foundation was established in honor of Yeardley Love, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player who was tragically killed in May 2010.

“Yeardley's story struck a chord with our program; the lacrosse community is so small that many of us know someone who knew her,” said Queens Director of Public Relations Meredith Post. “We wanted to make sure her legacy was brought into the Midwest to help spread awareness about the Foundation.”

“One Love Lacrosse Playday” will begin at 1 p.m. in Cincinnati at Wyoming Rec Center Field with the Queens playing round robin games throughout the afternoon with CapCity, Xavier University, Miami University and University of Kentucky. Admission to the event is $1 with all proceeds benefiting The One Love Foundation, whose mission is to encourage and develop in children and young adults four qualities that Yeardley exemplified, which are service, kindness, humility and sportsmanship.

“We are striving to raise awareness and funds for The One Love Foundation while establishing a sense of unity and giving amongst the lacrosse community in Cincinnati,” said Queens Vice President Meg Sanders. “Our goal is to bring everyone together for a day of lacrosse competition, fun and giving for a greater cause.”

In addition to raising funds for the Foundation, the Queens have set up an equipment and apparel drive to benefit the future lacrosse stars in the Greater Cincinnati area.

“We are collecting gently used lacrosse equipment and apparel to give to the future lacrosse stars of Cincinnati who may not be able to afford their own brand new equipment at the time, but have an interest in the sport,” said Sanders. “Part of the Cincinnati Queens' mission is to spread the love of the game in our local community and beyond! Our program runs clinics across the Greater Cincinnati area for youth and middle school players and this drive will help enable us to expand where we can spread the game of lacrosse in the city.”

Items that the Queens need are women's lacrosse equipment such as sticks, goggles, gloves and practice jerseys. Items will be collected at the gate on the day of the event.
